Why Botswana’s winter
The water is up, the land is drying, and the animals draw onto it. A short note on why the trips run when they do.
Winter here is the dry season, and it is when the Delta is at its best. The water that fell in Angola months ago arrives exactly as the land dries out, so the channels fill while everything around them thins. The effect is simple: animals concentrate on what water is left, and they are easier to find and to read.
The conditions are straightforward too. Mornings are cold, near freezing at dawn and warm by mid morning, the skies are clear and the dust has not built. Bring layers for the first drive; you will shed them by brunch.
What it means for a camera
Concentrated game is a forgiving thing to work with. You spend less of the morning searching and more of it already in position, waiting on something you can watch building. That is where the better frames come from. My 2027 departures sit either side of the coldest weeks: 5 to 12 June and 17 to 24 July.
