The Okavango Delta sits in north west Botswana, where the Okavango River spreads into permanent marshland and seasonally flooded plains. It is an inland delta: the water does not run onward to the sea. The flood moves slowly through channels, lagoons, islands, grassland and woodland before the sand and the sun take it back.
The unusual part is the timing. The annual flood arrives during Botswana’s dry season, so rising water and a drying landscape meet in the same place at the same time. Animals concentrate on what is left, and ground you drove yesterday can look different today.
